Do you know what this is?
You treat it like a normal vacation but you hang out around where you live essentially 🤷🏼♀️
You don’t have the headache of the travel, kids not sleeping well, and the cost.👌
You basically become a tourist in your own town/city. You treat it like you would treat a regular vacation by turning your phones off, and focusing on what it is your doing in the present moment.
We tried this the other weekend. I had big plans, and we didn’t end up doing everything because we didn’t need to.
We rented a room at fantasy land hotel for a night, and hung out in the mall.
The day we got there we went mini-golfing, and took the kids to the Disney store and let them pick one thing. Then back to the hotel for the rest of the evening.
We ordered our in-room dining, filled up the jacuzzi tub, and rented a new movie. The kids were excited to have a hot tub right in our room, and loved the bunk beds. We ended up being so played out that everyone went to sleep effortlessly.
We woke up the next day, had breakfast in the our room, then headed to the water park.
If you have young kids, you know how tiring the water park can be. Mind you, its just as tiring for a 30 year old. Everyone was wiped. We went home, the kids went to bed at their regular bed time, and we stayed up and played crib and had some drinks.
One thing about vacation that I love is the time I get to spend with my husband talking. Its so easy to just throw the tv on at the end of the night because were both tired and just want to relax. Whenever we go on vacation we end up bringing our crib board and all we do is play, have some drinks, and talk for the rest of the night.
The nice thing about staying at home is that we didn’t have to fight with the kids to sleep. They had their bedrooms, and their routine which allowed us to get some good time in together at the end of the night to relax and talk.
Treating the weekend like a vacation meant neither of us were glued to our phones, which was my favourite part, and I’m sure the kids appreciated it too.
To say that your going to spend less time on your phones on a regular basis, is easier said than done. I find when your on vacation it’s much easier. I guess just having it in our heads that we were on vacation, made this easier for the weekend.
When we were at home we ate easy meals with no dishes, or went out for meals. All though this was more costly then eating all the meals at home, a vacation TO ME, is not doing dishes or cooking. So I enjoyed this part thoroughly, and we thought it was worth it. I also didn’t do my laundry or clean the house. The home chores got shoved aside to be picked up Monday.
All in all, we all had a fun time. I think the next time we do this, we will skip the hotel and do some activities around Devon that we haven’t done before.
My original plan was to go to the hotel for a night, and for the other nights we were going to set the tent up in the living room.
I think this could be a lot of fun, but I just felt too lazy to do it.
Some other cool things to do for a staycation are:
-Build an epic blanket fort you leave up all weekend
-Do things you normally don’t do. Like set up tv trays and eat a meal watching a new movie.
-Let the kids make their own pizzas
-Board Game day
-Check out local spots you haven’t before: take a hike, walk, go explore the community
-Basically anything that you don’t do on a regular basis!
There are lots of things to do close to home, so why not skip all the travel and hassle and become a tourist in your own city!
